Syncline Winery & James Mantone

Syncline Winery was created by James & Poppy Mantone. While working in a cellar in the Willamette Valley in 1997, they met and fell in love. They began making wine in 1999 before planting their own property in 2003.

In 2018, James was named Seattle Magazine’s Winemaker of the Year in the Washington State Wine Awards. This award was, yes, for quality winemaking, but also for contributions to the Washington winemaking community and for putting the wines of Washington in the national spotlight.

James is always looking at the land and soil and finding ways to restore and increase the native vegetation, making sure this ecosystem can thrive.

We walked the Steep Creek Ranch Vineyard for an hour or so with James this fall. I just went through the video footage, and man, that is a fascinating conversation! (I can’t wait to share more of it with you!)
